AH Hydraulic Actuator

DEENPU Model AH Hydraulic Actuator is a piston-type actuator mounted on reverse-acting gate valves, engineered to be fail-safe and fail-close. The closed hydraulic system operates independently of well fluids and pressure, providing reliable automatic valve closure for high-pressure and large-bore wellhead applications.

Product Overview

DEENPU Model AH Hydraulic Actuator is a robust, piston-type actuator specifically designed for mounting on reverse-acting gate valves in critical wellhead safety applications. Its fail-safe, fail-close design ensures that the valve automatically closes upon loss of hydraulic control pressure, providing a fundamental layer of well control protection without reliance on external power or operator intervention.

The actuator operates on a closed hydraulic system that is completely independent of well fluids and well pressure. Hydraulic pressure applied to the piston holds the valve in the open position during normal operation. If control pressure is lost for any reason — whether due to power failure, line rupture, or deliberate emergency shutdown — the actuator’s return spring drives the valve to the fully closed position, isolating the wellbore and preventing uncontrolled flow.

As an added safety feature, DEENPU AH actuators incorporate a metal-to-metal seal between the bonnet and the lower stem. In the event of a fire, if the primary stem packing is damaged by extreme heat, this metal-to-metal secondary seal maintains pressure containment, providing critical fire-safe performance. The actuator is commonly used as a secondary master valve and wing valve on Christmas trees, flow lines, and other wellhead equipment where automated fail-safe closure is essential.

How It Works

The DEENPU AH actuator uses a piston-and-spring mechanism to control gate valve position. During normal operation, hydraulic control pressure is applied to the piston through the closed hydraulic system. This pressure overcomes the spring force and holds the piston in the retracted position, which in turn holds the gate valve in the open position.

When hydraulic pressure is lost — either through a controlled system shutdown or an emergency situation — the compressed return spring pushes the piston back to its resting position. This mechanical spring force drives the gate valve closed through the stem connection. The design is inherently fail-safe because the spring force acts in the fail-safe direction without requiring any external power source.

Upon restoration of hydraulic control pressure, the actuator automatically re-opens the valve. This automatic reset capability is valuable for remote or unmanned wellhead installations. The upper spring retainer keeps the return spring safely contained during maintenance.

Key Features

Fail-Safe / Fail-Close Design

Automatically closes the valve upon loss of hydraulic control pressure. Opens automatically when pressure is restored. No external power required.

Closed Hydraulic System

Operates completely independent of well fluids and pressure. Dedicated hydraulic circuit ensures consistent, predictable actuation performance.

Fire-Safe Metal Seal

Metal-to-metal seal between bonnet and lower stem provides secondary seal if primary packing is damaged by fire.

Position Indicators

Available with visual position indicators and electric position switches for remote monitoring and control system integration.

Easy Maintenance

Actuator is easily removable from the bonnet. Upper spring retainer safely contains the return spring during disassembly.

Corrosion Protection

Piston and actuator components are coated for corrosion protection. Backup wear ring reduces wear and maintains piston alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the fail-safe feature work?
The DEENPU AH actuator uses a mechanical spring to drive the valve closed. During normal operation, hydraulic pressure holds the valve open by compressing the spring. If hydraulic pressure is lost for any reason (power failure, line break, ESD activation), the spring automatically pushes the valve to the closed position. This fail-safe operation requires no external power.
What happens when hydraulic pressure is restored?
When hydraulic control pressure is restored, the actuator automatically re-opens the valve. This automatic reset eliminates the need for manual intervention, valuable for remote or unmanned wellhead installations.
What is the fire-safe metal seal feature?
In the event of a fire, primary stem packing can be damaged by extreme heat. The metal-to-metal seal between the bonnet and lower stem acts as a secondary seal, maintaining pressure containment even if packing is destroyed.
Can this actuator be used in sour gas service?
Yes. DEENPU AH actuators can be configured for NACE MR0175 sour gas service with controlled-hardness materials (max HRC 22), NACE-compliant bolting, and H2S-resistant seals and coatings.
What position indicator options are available?
DEENPU AH actuators offer visual position indicators for local confirmation and electric position switches for remote SCADA integration. Combination visual/electric indicators are available.
Is the actuator field-serviceable?
Yes. The actuator assembly is easily removable from the bonnet for maintenance. The upper spring retainer safely contains the return spring. DEENPU provides full maintenance documentation and spare parts kits.
