How Rotary Slips Work
Rotary slips are essential handling tools used on the rig floor to grip and suspend the drill string during tripping operations. The slips are placed into the master bushing of the rotary table, where their tapered outer surface wedges into the matching tapered bowl. As the weight of the drill string is set down, the slips are forced downward, and the wedging action tightens the grip around the pipe. The multiple insert segments distribute the gripping force evenly, preventing pipe damage while providing a secure hold.
The Varco-type wraparound design offers a key advantage over conventional slips: the full-circumference contact ensures uniform load distribution, eliminating point loading that can cause pipe deformation. When it’s time to pull the pipe, lifting the string releases the wedging force, allowing the slips to be easily removed from the bowl.
